Translation, both in the restricted sense of interlinguistic rewriting and the broader sense of a set of cultural and political activities, has increasingly featured in studies promoting a critical understanding of the development of political ideas and of global history. The humanities and the social sciences have experienced a translational turn, and are increasingly using translation as an analytical concept rather than merely a metaphor designating shifting disciplinary boundaries and cultural encounters in contemporary societies.

Materiality, Digital Cultures and Transmission
in Translation Studies

The theme of the XXI FIT Congress is Disruption and Diversification.

The emphasis of the FIT Congress 2017 will be on issues relating to disruption and diversification in all the fields of translation and interpreting.  The 2017 Congress will highlight the impacts of technology, globalisation, policy and economic change on the delivery of language services, with specific streams for indigenous and sign languages, interpreting in conflict zones, community interpreting and translation, and literary translation.  Presenting at the FIT Congress 2017 offers a valuable opportunity to meet members of the Translation and Interpreting professionals, academics, service providers and other stakeholders.

The ITI Conference is the biggest event in the UK translation and interpreting calendar. Held every two years, it attracts attendees from all over the world. In 2015, the ITI Conference welcomed over 300 delegates from over 20 countries to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was a resounding success.

By popular demand, in 2017, the ITI Conference makes a return to Cardiff, on 19 & 20 May. There will also be a day of preconference workshops and masterclasses on Thursday 18 May. This makes Cardiff the first city outside of London to play host to the ITI Conference twice.

The Pushing Hands of Translation and its Theory: In Memoriam Martha Cheung (1953-2013)

Edited by Douglas Robinson

When she passed away on September 10, 2013, Professor Martha Cheung left two major projects unfinished. The first was Volume 2 of her “Chinese Discourse on Translation” project; that unfinished editing work will be completed by her colleagues in the Translation Program at Hong Kong Baptist University. The other was a book on her “pushing hands” (tuishou 推手) approach to translation, on which she first gave a keynote at a translation history conference in Istanbul in 2009, published here:

April 14-16, 2014

Contributions are invited for a special issue of ITT dedicated to Situated Learning in Translator and Interpreter Training: Bridging Research and Good Practice. Situated learning is generally understood as a context-dependent approach to translator and interpreter training under which learners are exposed to real-life and/or highly simulated work environments and tasks, both inside and outside the classroom. Under this approach, it is the tasks and real life professional demands, as well as other contextual factors such as institutional, social, geographical, or community beliefs and customs, rather than a predetermined closed syllabus, that drive curricular design. Ultimately, situated learning seeks to enhance learners’ capacity to think and act like professionals.

“Collaborative Translation: from Antiquity to the Internet”
5-7 June 2014, Paris
Organized by the University of Paris 8 – Vincennes-Saint-Denis
Conference venues: The Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the University of Paris 8

This IATIS Regional Workshop will explore the diversity of translation practices which challenge the myth that the singular translator could or indeed should assume the place of an “original” author. We hope to encourage scholars to think about the collaborative dimension to all forms of translation, past and present, and to interrogate how creative practices are negotiated within institutional contexts. We welcome contributions which present collaborative translation histories and practices from beyond Europe, thereby contextualizing Western thinking about translation.
