Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe (EUME)

The Asfari Foundation works in the UK, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine giving talented and motivated but disadvantaged young people the opportunity to achieve the skills and knowledge to actively contribute to the development of their societies.

In honour of Professor Hu Zhuanglin and his extraordinary contribution to Australian studies from the late 1970s, the Australian Studies Centre at Peking University (PKUASC) has established a Distinguished Translator Fellowship in his name, with the view of promoting Chinese translation in the field of Australian Studies. As a collaborative program between PKUASC and the Foundation of Australian Studies in China (FASIC), the Hu Zhuanglin Distinguished Translator Fellowship will be selected and awarded annually by an academic committee, whose Director is Professor David Walker, BHP Billiton Chair Professor of Australian Studies at Peking University.

As one of its contributions to development cooperation, KU Leuven offers each academic year scholarships to deserving students from developing countries to do their PhD in the largest university of Flanders, Belgium. The programme is organized and managed by the Interfaculty Council for Development Cooperation.

Hong Kong Baptist University have set up a PhD Scholarship to honour Martha's memory. Those interested in sending donations for this fund please use the following form. Any donation made may be matched by a government grant.

PhD programme established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong: PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS).

The Scheme is aimed at attracting brilliant students from around the world to come for PhD studies in Hong Kong at Lingnan. Each fellowship awardee will be provided HK$20,000 per month (US$1=HK$7.8).

The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa is making available funding for postdoctoral research. Dr Kobus Marais, at the Department of Linguistics and Language Practice at the University of the Free State in South Africa, is inviting suitably qualified researchers, who have completed a PhD in the sociology of translation, translation and development or translation and semiotics during the past five years to apply for this funding opportunity. The best applicant(s) will be selected, and the application will be motivated with the NRF and the candidate will be supported with the application.

Students who are preparing a doctoral dissertation in the field of translation studies are invited to apply for this scholarship of 1,000 euros.

Applicants need not be EST members at the time of applying.

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies is offering up to six Professorial PhD Scholarships and up to four James Watt/SML PhD scholarships to start in the academic year 2013-14. The term of the scholarships is three years. Successful candidates will be expected to make a contribution to activities in the Department in return for a fee-waiver, a maintenance allowance of £13,590

The Heinrich Böll Foundation actively supports the democracy movements in Tunisia and Egypt. In a newly developed special programme, the scholarship department of the Foundation is offering, with the kind support of the Federal Foreign Office, scholarships to Tunisian and Egyptian students who want to study in Germany.

The Department of Language Management and Language Practice at the University of the Free State has a possible two-year postdoc of ZAR200 000 per annum to offer in translation studies. Interested candidates who have completed a PhD during the past ten years can send their CV to Kobus Marais at jmarais@ufs.ac.za Preference will be given to African students working on the development of translation studies in Africa, preferably from a sociological or intercultural perspective, but the selection panel may also consider other candidates. The closing date is 11 June. The panel reserves the right not to offer a grant if a suitable candidate is not found.
