The Chronicles of Majnun Layla and Selected Poems

Translating rich and complex Arabic poetry for a contemporary English-reading audience is no easy feat. But Ferial Ghazoul, chair of the department of English and comparative literature at the American University in Cairo, and John Verlenden, a writing instructor there, have won international acclaim for their translation of the poet Qassim Haddad’s The Chronicles of Majnun Layla and Selected Poems.

As a result of MoU signed by the Rector of the International Islamic University Islamabad and the Chairman CPPCC YINCHUAN CITY, China in 2006, a BA Honor Translation & Interpretation (Arabic-English) program was started in the Faculty of Arabic.

From the 9th to the 19th centuries, scholars and scribes used Arabic as a lingua franca to debate scientific ideas. Arabic-speaking scholars translated classical Greek, Persian and even Sanskrit texts on topics such as medicine, mathematics and astronomy.

Interpreting: Two Quick Memory Exercises
Posted on the Weblog of Translation Times
During last week's amazing 54th Annual American Translators Association Conference, several colleagues commented on the fact that we had good memory, as we tend to remember spouses' names, pets' names, and anecdotes that colleagues told us the previous year. We do think that we have decent memory, as we are both working interpreters, but just like all interpreters, we constantly work on it. Please read on for two simple exercises that we've been doing for many years. They seem to work, so we will continue doing them.

The English language seems, generally, to have a greater anxiety about translation than do others. It is not just bringing other works into translation (which we do rather sparely) or translating out (which we do a lot, but with occasional hand-wringing) it is the fact of translation’s existence, and how it affects literature:

The University of Salford is proposing to ‘disestablish’ its School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, and close down its language, linguistics, translation and interpreting degree provision, on UG and PG level, over the next few years. Staff and students in the School are informed that the activities carried out in languages, linguistics, translation and interpreting do not fit with the University’s new strategy and mission, and that closure is necessary to ensure financial sustainability at institutional level. Regardless of the impact of such cuts on the institution as a whole, which seems to be moving away from what should be the core mission of a University, the proposal is a blow to the achievements of the language and translation and interpreting community over the last few decades.

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Bahrain said Saturday that it filed a protest with Iran over a broadcast translation that wrongly substituted Bahrain for Syria in a speech by Egypt's president.
