Publication blurb:

Translation textbooks, as a unique element of translation studies in Chinese context, reflect the social perspective of translation studies: their development coincides with that of Chinese translation studies, mirroring the political and societal changes of China. This paper intends to present an overview of translation textbooks in the past sixty years in five stages: the initial stage, the development stage, the flourishing stage, the multi-directional stage and the professionalized stage. In each stage, some specific textbooks are selected for analysis and the general features of each stage are summarized and commented dialectically so that the trend of textbooks production could be predicted. More suggestions are made for making better and more constructive textbooks in the new period. The historical view ofthe development of translation textbooks indicates that translation textbooks are closely related to the development ofChinese society and history, showing that they are greatly influenced by governmental policies, economic construction and social development. Showing the growth of translation teaching in China, translation textbooks also reveal the progressive academic achievements in the translation field in different periods. Thus, tracing their history not only makes translation history in China more complete, but also adds something newand exotic to the translation history of the world.
