Publication blurb:

This thesis discusses the issue of poetic rhythm in poetry translation with examples of the translation of John Donne’s poems. First, it makes a brief survey of Chinese translators’ exploration of poetic rhythm, positively evaluating the theory of “translating poetic foot with semantic stop”, meanwhile pointing out the trend of formalism arising from it. Second, it discusses some issues of rhythm in poetry translation concerning such things as rhythm and feelings, rhythm and poetic theme, and rhythm and manners, suggesting that all these should be taken into consideration. Third,it advocates two principles for the translation of poetic rhythm—the rule of choice and the rule of harmony, opposing formalism and pointing out two extremes to be avoided: “rhythm the first” and “rhythm the last”.
