Publication blurb:

This paper looks into the relationship between translationand education in Hong Kong from the colonial period to thepostcolonial era. Despite the fact that translation has long been auniversity course and there are even Translation Departments inHong Kong’s universities, the focus of this paper is not onuniversity education but secondary education. The investigationis triggered by the addition of translation as a component in theNew Chinese Language subject curriculum which was implementedin 2009 when the governmental endeavour to engineer culturalidentification materialized. Translation was recruited for a roledifferent from the colonial period when the acquisition oftranslation skills was linked to practical needs
